Respect to Africa Day
By Rab Bakari • May 26th, 2008 • Category: Africa
Respect to African Unity Day; formally African Liberation Day. Now simply known as Africa Day.
African Liberation Day on May 25 is an annual holiday in various countries in Africa, coinciding with African Union’s Africa Day.
Although there does not exist one central site that gathers images, text, audio and video from global observations; I will mention my recognition here!
This year, many governments gave May 26th as a bank holiday. This coincided with the 45th anniversary of the finding of the OAU [Organization of African Unity].
Today we have the African Union chaired by Jakaya Kikwete, President of the Republic of Tanzania and the African Union Commission headed by Jean Ping of Gabon.
Peace in Africa!
Greetings to all on African Unity Day!
• Africans may have been freed from European colonial rule; but not
dictatorial and corrupt governmental rule by it’s own. (Africa eats it’s
own!)
• Economically, not much has changed since the dynamic late 50s and 60s of
the last century.
• The proper link between Africans outside of Africa & inside Africa has NOT
ben welded.
• Without meaningful development and with re-occuring leadership problems;
‘Liberation‘ and unity is a bottomless hole!
• What’s Next?
- Yes the AU (African Union) is an awkward step in the right direction.
Modeled after the EU; Africans tend to forget that Western Europeans fought
each other for centuries before changing the human & environmental face of
the Earth forever…before ‘getting together’.
- More intra-African, Caribbean/South American trade must be established
without Europe or North America as an intermediary. (Of course…where do
you place Africans in North America?..I’m talking about soveirgn governments
which clearly have an African majority! They know who they are!)
- Let’s give young Africans between the age of 30-45; particularly women to
opportunity to try and build a ‘proper’ and decent government based on
traditional African laws. Everyone else’s style of government & development
has been tried!
Here a link to a site with how this African Liberation day came about.
